„umwelt’s 12inch “… city” from 1999 was one of the most impressive 12inches i had at that time and i played the shit out of it. it was dark and very emotional, it was abstract but also driving at the same time. this was 1999 though, before discogs and before facebook and all the other platforms people have now to do research on artists they like and follow their work. at that time it was the record shop – and that was it. nobody knew this guy though, and i didn’t get my hands on any of the following releases, so in my world there was no follow-up to this record ever and i thought it would remain a one-off gem in my record box. until by some coincident i recently discovered he was still around and had actually released numerous releases in the meantime. i was very excited and contacted him straight away and ended up booking him for krake festival in the same year. undoubtedly his set was one of the best of the whole festival! he took the roof off the place with his mix of raw electro, industrial and rave and everybody was talking about it afterwards, saying it was the highlight of the festival! talking to him i learnt, that most of the tracks he played were his own, mostly unreleased. he produces without computers, all his tracks are single takes, there is no editing, no mixing afterwards, he only has a stereo track recording which is what it is. he owns a cutting machine which he uses to cut dubplates from his tracks, which he then plays out during his sets. this whole information about this very unique artistic approach just killed it for me, and since working with him was so nice as well, i asked him for a demo for killekill and its labels and was hoping for tracks i could make a great 12&#8243,, of. i got 14 tracks and after weeks of trying to pick the best, i finally realized i held one of the best electro albums ever in my hand – banging beats and the balls to go big and epic, subtle melodies, drama, funk – this album has got it all, and what’s most important, the music on it is the exact opposite of so much other music nowadays: it is emotional, it tells a story, it is easily recognizable and it is not interchangeable. it’s just umwelt.“ nico deuster

here comes argoman, the antihero of disco music. inspired by the 1960s b movie super hero argoman, the name literally means lazy man, however its also a combination of three italian producers names, who started the project about one year ago. the track chimicalissimo merges the vibrant rhythms of disco with the emotional approach of modern electronic music. its a peak-time dancefloor banger completely produced with analog synths and drum machines. the tune is a proper voyage between syncopated rhythms and heavy basslines soaked with synth melodies that often recall idm progressions. the dub version gives more space to a melancholic piano melody that culminates through analog arpeggios to an unstoppable build. black spuma remix finally turns the track into a slow burning disco monster.

never one to rest, our pal the revenge has been busy as always. his latest lp as 6th borough project find your rhythm recently dropped on roar groove, he created a beautifully delicate remix of auntie flos waiting for a (woman), had a change of scenery relocating from scotland to denmark and his collab ep with dirt crew, flush with nachtbraker remixes was one of our biggest records of 2016! amongst the action he’s taken the time and a more in yer face approach to write us his latest ep, a four-tracker of proper club tracks. every night brims with raucous disco energy. the french filter house reminiscent gems strings shimmer and funk horns hit heavy, a jam destined to wear holes in shoes. grit attends to the easy-going disco grooves we love so much from the revenge, plenty of shake and soul its overflowing with good-mood energy. b-side opener never learn gives us a glimpse of the darker end of the revenge’s spectrum. subby toms rumble, tweaked out synths bleep and slide and delayed key stabs shift the party into smoke hazed, underground rave mode. the closing track krokodille brings that bass n electro gritty booming sound! the acidic lead wraps around sturdy drums. straight forward with plenty of kick, what an ending to a high quality ep!

rune returns on his own drum island imprint, this time very ably assisted by uk house turned ambient ambassador chris coco weekend billionaires, in its original form is a delightfully lolloping balearic builder. the chris coco sunshine mix immerses those guitar licks and synth pads in a sea of dubbed out, ultra-violet light. already rumoured to be included on harvey s eagerly awaited mercury rising comp. anton klint (tryck & ton / public possession) steps up on the flip with a no-less psychedelic, but decidedly more laser-lit interpretation. finally alta lab wraps things up with a pacier interpretation, housing up the elements into a hypnotic, emotive rendition

with his new release the polish transatlantyk sails into - as yet uncharted - waters of the lol- fi breakbeat house scene to bring you the debut of dj stoner dad. not much is known about the man behind the nickname, except that he is a dj, a dad and that he likes getting his hits from the bong on during the infamously long warsaw afterparties. the -raw romantics ep- showcases his own take on the deeply saturated, smokey and breakbeat-infused house genre. fake strings is a certified banger alluring the dancefloor with a great combo of rolling bass, squashed kicks and hats, grimy, atmospheric pads and a bits of spoken word thrown in. magic phunk brings that break again and for a good measure. drums are floating over an ocean worth of blazing pads, liquid synths, acid riffs, pillowy, yet dirty chords and whatever else dj stoner dad could lay his hands on at the time. iv is a full frontal ambient jam, with little bits of wandering drums coming into the picture at the very end. finally v brings cinematic influences over slightly uneasy slow groove.

a sublime slice of boogie-funk, alec mansion has steadily gained the status of a crate-digging classic. accordingly, it has been near-impossible to unearth a physical copy in good condition for many years. be with is delighted to present the first ever vinyl reissue, remastered in time to grace the discerning terraces and boat parties of the coming summer months. originally released in 1983, the lp arrived with impeccable credentials programming duties were handled by dan lacksman (the brains behind telex, the belgian kraftwerk) whilst production came from marc moulin (of jazz-rock fusion heroes placebo). at the time its merits were mainly praised by radio and studio heads. today, mansions masterpiece is lauded by boogie aficionados from liege to los angeles.

following the success of ‘ride’ with miss kittin, eminent sci+tec founder dubfire returns with another chaos-conjuring techno composition. previously the sole-preserve of his epic sense-blurring hybrid show, dubfire is finally unleashing ‘dust devil’… his first solo release in several years, ‘dust devil’ is all about precision momentum. a move that dubfire’s made his signature, you can physically feel movement and destination throughout. especially as we reach the short breakdown where the riff revolves faster and higher, providing space for the echoed stabs that whirl and twist around you intensely. as the drums re-ignite, the riff is suddenly converted into groove energy as the jack-minded persistence brings the elements back together with pure focus. this is what ali has to say… “this was an instrumental i had done that i wasn’t quite sure what to do with. it wasn’t strong enough for a lead single and it always felt as though there was something missing, perhaps a spoken or sung vocal. so i sort of put it out of my mind until it was time to compile the music for the hybrid show back in the summer of 2013. once i had the backbone of the set list, along with the visual look, there seemed to be a more defined mood and look. and when i happened upon this track again it seemed to have been tailor-made for this show. it was also nice to insert something no one had heard before to break things up a bit.

it took me a couple of years get invited to christophe de groot’s (aka circadian rhythms) homebase, and a couple more years to dive into his sonic archive. but time tells and basic moves 02 is what came out. the two tracks were recorded at earguard studio in brussels around 1996, at a moment when his interest was moving away from club music towards other golden musical horizons. “frequency” is a macro tech-house track in mid tempo.
i’m super happy i could archive it on wax because we almost fucked up the master dat tape by blowing up the player during a marathon listening session at his place. we had to open the device, unroll the tape across his house (full of records) and fold it back into the mini dat cassette. after a few hours and twenty metres of tape, the problem was solved and the tracks archived: “a dose of authenticity at a time of post-counter-cultural stagnation”. “house speaker call” originated in proto-techno forms. christophe never sees techno as a type of music but as a process. as a producer, collector and deejay he always dives deep into authentic forms of electronic music. deg’s antic personality shines out in the middle of the harsh beat-driven electro/techno track like a hopeful melody passing by on its elliptic orbit. tune your cells into his vibrations and get ready for these two timeless club tracks.

bottom forty s fifth release and second vinyl press showcases two french producers living and banging the drums in berlin, a long time bottom forty favorite, la fraicheur, teamed up with veteran producer and leonizer record label ownerleonard de leonard. la fraicheur, a producer of emotional and story-telling minimal techno, is seen here paired with leonard de leonard to turn up the heat on our first club-banger release track, -afraid of the groove-. la fraicheur and leonard de leonard beat the hell out of their analog elektron to lay out a relentless whipping melody that demands a twirling dance floor while a classic minimal bass line, rhythm and -she s uh-fraid of the groove- sample keep this track dark, dirty and underground. in a beautiful contrast to the heart-pounding a-side, flip to the b-side for -une place au soleil-. literally translated as -a place in the sun-, the saying is more about conveying the emotion of your hard work is putting you in a good place in life . -une place au soleil- is a gorgeous deep house track filled with teasingly melodic stabs and subtle hardware sounds that come and go, crashing on the record like powerful but soothing waves on the hot beach sands. while -afraid of the groove- may twist a peak-hour dance floor into a frenzy, -une place au soleil- will entrance them in the after hours, reminding dancers why electronic music is so beautiful and why dance floors can carry so much emotional release.

sharif laffrey is one of the great unsung heroes of detroit s dance music scene, having been instrumental in putting on parties in the motor city for many years and spinning records in all kinds of legendary spots. when he s not busy promoting, laffrey also finds time to turn out productions under aliases such as quadrant and maersk. primarily though, his recent work has been under his own name for the likes of love on the rocks and discos capablanca, who he returns to here with a single sided sure shot entitled always. it s a heated, jacking club track that screams of laffrey s detroit roots, with an early house thrust and wild 80s-style sampling that will set the party alight.

timothy heretic’clerkin has a new record out. this new record is called serenade. it is out on ransom note records. it is three tracks from timothy and one remix from marlon hoffstadt. all four tracks are winners. they sound like the 90s remade by people too young to remember the shit bits. there are breakbeats. there are acid lines. there are weird samples about drugs. there are things that sound like orbital. there is no time wasted.

retina is a cosmic exercise, with galactic resonant bleeps, atmospheres and ambiental components in a dreamy structure.

the snooze fest is over and we’re back in the saddle with the first output from colin la plante aka the mole aka half owner of this imprint. he’s been touring up a storm and playing out a lot of new music we’re excited to share with you this year.
spicy noodles are something colin thinks everyone can love…not one at a time…but by the bowl.
this four tracker definitely shows off “new directions” for the mole – nothing too outlandish mind you, but the path he chose with the title and crowd favourite “gelb grun blau” definitely has these tracks leaning towards the centre of a dj sets vs. beginning or end…spiralling kick drums with a fine grind blend of digital synths, analog synths, drum machines and the occasional samples here. vape-house anyone?
the closer “back in the studio game” is a beatless one created just for the sunrises of your life.

ali renault s ever on-point vivod label welcomes uk techno stalwart tobias schmidt to the table for a return to a time when techno could be slamming, witty and downright fun at the same time. higher is loaded with funk, riding some kind of bassy lick with tightly wound drums and off-kilter synth warbles, but then -glass walls- ramps up the madness with a lead line that will stop people in their tracks before making them freak out with gusto. -pink milk- shows no let up in the energy, although the parping trumpet lines that lead the track give everything a jaunty, upbeat feel compared to the darkness of the a side. play people is a true tribute to the wonky techno scene schmidt came up with, all skronky swing and lopsided synths for all the true techno freaks out there.

solid uncoated returns with its second release, again compiling four productions from the inner circle of its network. d’evoé opens the field with »failures«, a gloomy and cavernous hardware track resembling the bassline and pad recipe from s/u 001 in a more offensive manner. next up is arian alexander, one half of the monogenic duo, with »pakchoi«: a lesson in sub-heavy, effective purism, pushing sparse chord stabs over a swinging 909 rhythm. opening up the flipside there is bool again, another acquaintance from the first 12 inch, delivering his trademark peak-time sounddesign within a massive, morphing chord sculpture. the circle is completed by sub accent from france, another newcomer to the s/u family, represented here with an amtmospheric track of industrial-leaning, widescreen ambienttechno. limited to 300 hand stamped copies.

occassional duo pjotr g & dubiosity have become household prruk names within short time. a couple of months after the well received “a man is no island” ep a new submission to the ever extended prrukblk catalog was provided in the form of “savant”, a 4 track spanning work of staggering techno with the significant filmic elements that pjotr g and dubiosity cleverly incorporate into their hazy works of techno. whereas the a side is based on these elements, on the b side darker elements are introduced. “savant” is a ferm but uplifting techno record.

welcome to the long awaited 5th vinyl output of huehelix. this time, we focus on ryuji takeuchi, who brings 4 versatile factors to complete the renaissance artistique ep. factor a is no doubt the most straight techno style banger, which ryuji himself has been dropping in a peaktime of his every set at gigs in berlin, rotterdam, osaka and more, that always takes audience to another place. factor b shows a strong influence from ebm, noise, industrial music, which can be a starter of a set, with mad and strong break before its peaktime. factor c is for sure the strongest and hardest track in this ep, with high bpm with crazy acid synth melody. factor d closes the ep with percussive and synthy aspects. this ep really indicates how ryuji has evolved for his entire career and where he’s heading to. definitely the one not to miss. please keep your eyes and ears open, huehelix never stops.

claude debussy (+1918) was one of the most popular and forward thinking composer associated with impressionist music. his innovative and at this time new way to compose music with non traditional scales and chromaticism inspired countless artists from the likes of steve reich, philip glass, miles davis and herbie hancock. remarkable attributes of his music were i.e. the usage of parallel chords, bitonality and many compositions of whole-tone and pentatonic scales and all this surely reminds us on contemporary electronic music where you hardly find limits or boundaries when it comes to traditional, harmonic sounding scale tone music. after studying countless composers of the last centuries marc romboy decided to accept the challenge to edit, remix and reconstruct several works of his favorite french composer, ranging from „la mer“ to -prélude à l après-midi d un faune“. romboy: „one sentence of debussy impressed me a lot when he said that he simply intents to write new sounding music. this is and has been exactly my goal, to create kind of unheard sounds“. on the album romboy performs together with the dortmund philharmonic orchestra, the renowned conductor ingo-martin stadtmüller, the well respected düsseldorf based concert master miki kekenj and sound programmer ali khalaj. the recordings was directed december 12th 2016. it s the first live recording ever released on an album where electronic sounds and classical components were merged in such manner.

london’s ghost writerz are back with a banger! following a slew of releases on tru thoughts and a recent mixtape -welcome to ghost town- heating up the streets, jimmy screech and sleepy time ghost return with a big splash on nice up! records. based around a familiar reggae riddim, the track tells the tale of jimmy’s foundation in soundsystem culture, starting in the 80s and name-checking legends such as shabba ranks, yellowman, smiley culture along the way. as the riddim flips we shift forward a generation, 90s dancehall and rap dominate, giving props to hip hop royalty such as busta rhymes and 2pac, then finally firing off a huge jungle climax, dripping in enough amen breaks to set the dancefloor alight whilst giving a little history of the musical heritage behind ghost writerz.

jordon saxton aka lk has become a regular name on shall not fade, having remixed detroit legend rick wade last time out, his third output features four breathtaking tracks which showcase another dimension to his productions. the four track ep features ambient, jazz infused cuts, perfectly for the dancefloor.

with the big smoke hitting near 40°c heat and the office stock melting away, lobster theremin go in for a scorched-earth techno summer with another drum-roasted, rave-heavy ep this time from hard-hitting vancouver duo minimal violence aka lida p and ashlee luk.
having built a reputation for drum-heavy, blown-out & acidic hardware live sets - and with insanely strong eps for 1080p, jungle gym and first second label already in the bag - their entry point to the lobster label family is a bumper one with five tracks that span doom-laden acid, staggered uk rave and emotive club jungle. this record in particular captures their intense and irrepressible live energy, whilst riffing heavily on more classic club tropes than their previous output.

two years on from their move to berlin, british brothers alex & digby return with a 10 track, triple lp album to their home imprint flash as a rat on the 19 june. the album is said to show the duos full commitment to sound and experimentation after being written during a very personal time to them both. the album title -for my process” echoes this. coming form a engineering background as well as being know for their modular wizardry and band based upbringing, expect band psychedelia with dance sensibility.

henrik schwarz and !k7 are proud to announce a collaboration that will bare many different musical fruits. the first of these is a brand new label called between buttons, curated by henrik and focused on acoustic sounds and contemporary compositions. between buttons will be in partnership with !k7’s own neo-classical hub 7k!, and will kick off with a new mini lp by schwarz entitled works piano, followed by an ep entitled aphorisms by syrian artists khaled kurbeh & raman khalaf ensemble. mixing up old and new technologies, experimental and more classical approaches, the label will see schwarz forge new paths in his own work, as well as curating material from the peers he has worked with over the last 15 years. mainly made up of acoustic sounds, piano, string quartets, self-built instruments, percussion and intriguing classicist elements with a modern twist, there will be eps from piano virtuoso bugge wesseltoft, as well as other electronic producers wanting to show themselves in a different, more unplugged light. “in these times of constant turbo mode, likes and thumbs-up, we need to go back to basics,” says henrik. “we want to move away from the idea that relentless hasty productivity is a must, and instead take time to create space, to let ideas mature and to focus the mind on subtler sounds.” works piano will be a four track mini album that uses a yamaha disklavier as the starting point and reimagines it, reworks it and alters it with various digital and recording technologies. one track is a created with a reactive algorithm and one is composed purely from altered and processed piano sounds.

with releases from lerosa, andy mac and piezo already under our belts, idle hands strides towards the summer with a transmission from a kindred spirit across the pond. area, sometimes known as m50, has been flying the flag for forward thinking electronic music in chicago for a long time. his radio shows on wnur have a distinctive quality one step to the side of the music his hometown is best known for, while his label kimochi sound has released incredible music from the likes of benjamin brunn, strategy and many more besides. as a producer area has been equally prolific since first emerging in 2007. from ethereal sound and steadfast to untilmyheartstops and sequencias, his various approaches to rhythm and texture are all bound together by a meditative quality that feels like a perfect fit for idle. on this single, both sides of the 12- continue the theme of dusty, dusky 4/4 area is most widely known for, locking on to a house groove while sporting the abstract atmosphere of techno. -rlgl- is an understated, emotional heater that uses looped up fragments as a counterpoint to the more lilting strings and static that bed the track. notice takes a more overtly melancholic approach with its lingering, heavily processed keys that drift in between a tough set of drums. theres a punch to the track that will translate beautifully to a big system, even as the melodics spell out a more intimate listening experience.

beautiful deep house by label boss tyson ballard. tyson has covered all grounds on his latest ep - feel like i feel. *charges* begins the experience as a slow jam with the essence of uku kuut or moon b. the title track is an euphoric journey of lost love with long time friend sheff providing hypnotic vocals and linkwood giving his master stroke on the rhodes, creating a highly charged emotionally intense atmosphere. *all night* starts gearing towards the early morning hours vibe following into *all day* which rounds out the ep with a perfect powerhouse. nice!

for over two decades, dread recordings have time and time again maintained their seminal output with every release. managing to present a crossover of old school and more modern day techniques, they’ve given fresh life to the jungle riddims which made drum & bass so prominent during its inception. and for this subsequent release, label head honcho ray keith steps up to the plate, bringing with his a deliciously rolling selection of bass heavy proportions. with a massive back catalogue and an even more impressive roster, the figurehead’s addition goes on to expand the credibility heralded by both the artists and imprint. dread recordings continue to impress, with a history documented through their stellar releases.

social experiment regular jonathan lee is back with a standout fourth release for the imprint. here he delivers four driving club cuts aimed squarely at the dance floor and once again showcases his intimately production style to perfect effect. the raw grooves that are the trademark of jonathan s sound are on show once again, but there is a subtle evolution as this exciting producer’s sonic palette just gets better and better. don t sleep on this.

3 teens kill 4 was born in the summer of 1980 in the east village of new york city. they took their name from a new york post headline. the group consisted of doug bressler, brian butterick, julie hair, jesse hultberg, david wojnarowicz. there was a conscious decision not to have a front person or lead singer. david made cassette tapes with voices and sounds that he held up close to a microphone, fast-forwarding and rewinding. julie tried different rhythms on a korg rhythm machine. brian played a casio drum machine and jesse was on bass. doug joined the group in time to make the debut album. he was a music lover who understood how to avoid covering over the band’s non-musicality. their debut 7-song mini-album “no motive” was recorded in fall 1982 and self-released in 1983.

mr. frankie knuckles - this time operating under his night writers alias. we re not sure too much needs to be said about this one, it s all here really, that classic knuckles deep touch, the musicality, the vibe... ricky dillard s vocals encapsulating that feeling when the music takes over, pure abandon. the pairing of these two talents results in what would eventually become a bona-fide house classic.

lyon-based beatsmith ethyène has patented a certain style of mid-tempo house music applying a french touch aesthetic to disco, r&b and hip-hop sample references. through releases on longtime underground favorite kolour ltd and upstart labels like kyoku, as well as contributions to his own moonrise hill material, the frenchman has quickly built a sought after discography. his collaboration with better listen comes at an interesting time, as he seems to really be refining his sound, maturing sonically and honing the synthesis of the aforementioned influences to something nicely unique. the playin with fire ep is a deliciously bittersweet four track affair. the a1 slot sees e joining forces with his homie, the much acclaimed folamour, for the superlative why my love. meanwhile, loneliness of the shadow dancer- continues the r&b cream vibes, combining a classic head-nodding hip-hop flip with a soul chorus. the b-side gets a bit moodier, with the title track climatically building on hypnotically deep riffs and vocals and i sold yayo to buy kicks serving as the bob james-esque closer. the package is a cohesive reflection of a pensive and slightly anguished mindstate, with boom bap cultural influences and his familiar philadelphia streets functioning as the canvas. dont be surprised if this record serves as a point of stylistic elevation for the young producer, with plenty more of this new ammunition in the chamber. and you know the saying: if you play with fire, you might turn into a scorching hot phoenix.
